addaword.gifdefinition of initialism

an abbreviation that uses the first letters of an expression or organisation, such as IMHO (in my humble opinion) or BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). It is different from an acronym, which also uses the initial letters but which pronounces them as a word (eg NATO)
In writing using initialisms starting with "S" do you use "a" or "an". In particular, I am talking about an initialism like STI or STD. Do you write "an STI" or "a STI"?
