definition of Zil lane
(also Games lane)
in the context of the Olympics, a lane of a public road that is reserved for competitors, officials and sponsors, with fines for members of the public who use them. (Named after a similar practice in the Soviet Union where the fast lane of certain roads was reserved for official limousines)
the Transport Secretary, has tried to defuse the controversy by urging corporate sponsors to use public transport to get to and from the Games venues, rather than triggering more resentment by being swept past motorists in the “Zil Lanes”.
