imprisonment for public protection; used to refer to prison sentences where the convicted person has no automatic right to be released after a certain period, but can be released only when it is believed that they are no longer a danger to society
IPP sentences are usually given to someone who has been convicted of a serious specified violent or sexual offence, for which the maximum sentence is 10 years or more and who, in the court’s view, poses a significant risk of serious harm to the public.
