MacmillanDictionary.com is the perfect place to come to if you are an English learner or if you need English in your work, daily life or studies.

Have you noticed that some of the words are in red? These are the most frequent 7,500 words in English, and if you’re in Show More mode, you’ll also see how common they are depending on how many stars they’ve got.

You will find the definitions easy to understand, as they’re written using the most common vocabulary. You can also click on any word within the definition to get to that word’s entry.

If entries are long, we’ve given you a menu at the top, so that you can jump straight to the meaning you’re looking for. No more scrolling…!

The combination of corpus data and state-of-the-art software allows us to analyse how words behave and combine with one another. Many of these are shown in the entry itself, but if you’re in Show More mode, you can also see the special collocation boxes. Now you know that words have friends too!

MacmillanDictionary.com also offers unique treatment of metaphor, showing how many ordinary familiar words and phrases have metaphorical meanings, although we do not usually realise this when we use them.

Not sure how a word is pronounced? Click on the speaker symbol next to each word, and learn how to sound like a local.
