Macmillan Dictionaries win another award!

The Macmillan School Dictionary CD-ROM and website has won the English-Speaking Union’s President’s Award 2004.

The ESU President’s Award was inaugurated in 2003 at the request of the President of the ESU, HRH Duke of Edinburgh KG KT. It recognises and encourages the best use of free-standing new technology to enhance English teaching and learning worldwide.

The judging panel was co-chaired by Professor David Crystal OBE, and Professor Margaret Buck, Head of Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design and also included experts from the fields of language, design and technology. The Assessors were looking for ‘good design concepts and a sound theoretical basis.’

According to the ESU, 'the judges felt that the website was user friendly and accessible, with comprehensive and interesting vocabulary lists. They enjoyed the moving graphics on the CD-ROM and found the games and sounds useful and explanatory. They thought that the dictionary was well priced and a valuable classroom resource, well-rounded and well-designed.'

This is the third award in two years for Macmillan Education’s new range of learner dictionaries. The Macmillan English Dictionary won the ESU Duke of Edinburgh English-Language Book Award 2002. The Macmillan English Dictionary and its range of supporting products, including electronic components, won a British Council Innovation Award in April 2004. This latest ESU President’s Award recognises the excellence of the Macmillan Education electronic dictionaries team, led by Ian Johnstone (Internet Publishing Director), Guy Jackson (Development Manager), Gwyneth Fox (Dictionaries Publisher) and Katalin Sule (Managing Editor).

Gwyneth's Kenya tour

Gwyneth Fox enjoyed a hugely successful tour around Kenya, including Nakura, Nairobi and Machakas. She gave daily workshops to between 70 and 125 teachers, which were also attended by provincial school inspectors. She spoke on how learners’ dictionaries are written and why they include the information that they do, and incorporated a number of different activities. Her audiences were hugely enthusiastic, enjoyed participating in the activities and question-and-answer sessions, and the workshops generated a huge amount of interest in the Macmillan English and Macmillan School Dictionaries. Gwyneth also attended the Nairobi Book Fair at the Sarit Centre with Mary Mbuthia, Sales and Marketing Manager at Macmillan Kenya.

Macmillan Kenya also organised a press conference, with about a dozen members of the media, including newspapers, magazines, radio and television. She and David Muita, Managing Director of Macmillan Kenya, appeared on TV, and there were photos the following day in the papers.
