January 2002

Probably the first MED university adoption
in the world

Assumption University, Bangkok Thailand, confirmed that they would be using the Macmillan English Dictionary on the day of the Bangkok launch, 22nd January 2002. All first year students will be using the MED at the beginning of the new academic year in June.

Currently, students are already using the MED on pre-sessional English courses at this the oldest English-medium university in Thailand.

When asked why she had been so quick to decide on the the MED, the Chairperson of the English Department, Laura Brahmakasikara, said "When I was first presented the dictionary I was immediately impressed by the layout. The thing I liked most was that all the most frequent words are in red." When asked what they thought about the Macmillan English Dictionary, students on the intensive pre-sessional commented:

  • "It’s a very useful dictionary. There are many illustrations and up-to-date words; the explanations are good and easy to understand."

  • "Although it’s heavy, it’s full of knowledge. Most people usually use a talking dictionary, but this dictionary is more useful."

  • "It helps me find words that I don’t know quickly, it’s very useful."

  • "Don’t forget to buy it! It’s really good."
