Fame in Korea - KOTESOL 2002
October 2002

Gwyneth Fox is just back from a week’s trip to South Korea. She attended the 10th KOTESOL Conference in Seoul, where she gave a featured speaker presentation and a commercial workshop to introduce the Macmillan English Dictionary. She also gave talks at three of the leading universities – Yonsei, Korea, and Hanyang – to both students and staff

One day, Gwyneth signed 100 hundred dictionaries for Nexus, the Korean distributor, for them to raffle, give away as prizes, and advertise for sale in a local newspaper. Look out for these if you live in Korea!

Whilst in Seoul she had two newspaper interviews, one with the Korea Times, an English language newspaper, and the other with Dong A Ilbo, a Korean newspaper with 2.2 million subscribers a day. This appeared with a photo of Gwyneth and – just to prove that people really do read the paper – she was recognised by a sales assistant when she was buying some of the beautiful Korean green pottery in one of the major department stores. Gwyneth realised that something odd was going on when the sales assistant talked animatedly to Jeong Sook, one of Macmillan’s local staff. There was lots of laughter, and she knew they were talking about her. Then Jeong Sook explained that the assistant had recognised her from her photo and was asking more about her. Fame at last for Gwyneth! And the Macmillan English Dictionary!
