Macmillan Dictionaries were exhibited at the Macmillan book exhibition which accompanied an academic conference on the theme of 'The Educational Reform: Pedagogical Considerations and Practical Recommendations' at the Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco.

The conference was organised by Mme Hanan Bennoudi of the English department of the Arts Faculty of the University and the exhibition was organised by Mr Ahmed Atlagh.

Gwyneth Fox attended the 5th CAMELTA (Cameroon English Language and Literature Teachers’ Association) Conference in Yaounde, sponsored by Macmillan Education.

She gave the keynote address – ‘The Attraction of Words’ – to open the conference, and gave two workshops on ‘Using Dictionaries to Improve Vocabulary Learning’. Gwyneth was also interviewed on CRTV for the Monday Show and for various radio programmes.

Macmillan sponsors the 25th English-Speaking Union International Public Speaking Competition Final in London


Macmillan once again sponsored the English-Speaking Union International Public Speaking Competition, for the fourth year running, awarding copies of the Macmillan English Dictionary to all 55 participants.

The overall winner this year was Konstantin Lazutin from St Petersburg, Russia, with his speech entitled ‘Starvation’. He is pictured here (right) accompanied by (from left) Runner-up Arty Papageorgiou from New Zealand, Guy Jackson from Macmillan Education, and Best Non-Native English Speaker Sergiu Stefan from Bucharest, Romania. The competition is an annual event which brings together the individual winners of national competitions organised by the ESU network in 33 countries. All participants took their speech titles from the theme of this year's final, 'Mapping the Global Future’.

The proceedings were opened by Valerie Mitchell, Director-General of the ESU, and the judges for the final were The Rt Hon Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone, Paul Edmondson, Head of Education at Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust, David Faber, Historian and Author and Robert Rowland, former Editor of Panorama.

Macmillan sponsors Spelling Championship

For the fourth year running, Macmillan sponsored the Morocco Spelling Bee Club’s Spelling Championship for non-native speakers of English.

This took place on 26th May in Agadir. The final contained tests in dictation, spelling bee, word building, word jumble and homophones. The three winners were Mohamed Tahraoui from Chtouka-Ait-Baha Delegation, Najma Farissi from Tiznit Delegation and Safia Boutaleb from Inezgane-Ait-Melloul Delegation.

All the winners and finalists received Macmillan dictionaries as prizes.
