HRH The Duke of
Edinburgh presents the English Language Book Award
On
a cold but sunny winter morning, winners, guests and sponsors gathered
together in the elegant surroundings of the Cinema at Buckingham
Palace for the award ceremony of the Duke of Edinburgh ESU English
Language Book Award.
The Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, published
by Macmillan, was chosen as this years winner of the competition for
its innovation, modernity, creativity, presentation and practicality.

The Macmillan
English Dictionary for Advanced Learners has been announced WINNER
of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh English-Speaking Union English
Language Book Award in 2002.m
The
Duke of Edinburgh English-Speaking
Union Award is presented annually to the best and most innovative
work in the field of teaching or learning the English language. This
prominent award for the most innovative work of the year on the English
Language whether presenting a description, a teaching methodology or a
work devoted to language in use for a specific purpose of profession, is
applicable to books published between 1st July 2001 and 30th
June 2002.
The Macmillan English Dictionary
is the first dictionary to have received this award in a long time. HRH
The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT, President of the ESU and Chairman of the
English Language Council, will present the award at Buckingham Palace

Fame
in Korea KOTESOL 2002
Gwyneth Fox is just back
from a weeks trip to South Korea. She attended the 10th KOTESOL
Conference in Seoul, where she gave a featured speaker presentation and
a commercial workshop to introduce the Macmillan English Dictionary.
She also gave talks at three of the leading universities Yonsei,
Korea, and Hanyang to both students and staff.

Magazine
The first issue of the free online MED Magazine was published
earlier in October. Every
month, the magazine offers you exclusive access to feature articles
and regular columns covering a wide range of topics and activities
relating to English teaching and the Macmillan English Dictionary
and CD-ROM. If
you haven't registered for this already, you can do so by updating
your profile.

Conference
Circuit
Gwyneth
Fox and Michael Hoey
have been busy on the conference circuit over the past month. Gwyneth
spoke at the Slovak Association of
Teachers of English Conference in Presov, Slovakia,
and the LATEUM
Conference in Moscow, Russia.
Meanwhile, Michael flew the MED flag at the Esse
2002 Conference in Strasbourg, France, and the ATECR
Conference in Liberec, Czech Republic.

The
MED
for the King of Thailand
The King of Thailand has been
presented with a special leather bound edition of the Macmillan English
Dictionary and additional copies for use by staff in the Office of His
Majesty the King.

The
MED launches
in London
Despite the predictable rainy weather, the MED was blessed and
launched at Samuel Johnsons house in central London by both a
resuscitated Samuel Johnson, father of the English dictionary, and
rain-sodden V.S. Naipaul, the Nobel Prize winner for English Literature.

York
The
Macmillan English Dictionary had a very successful launch at
the 36th International IATEFL conference held in York in March.

JANUARY
2002
Adoption in Thailand
Probably the first MED university adoption in the world
Assumption
University, Bangkok, Thailand, confirmed that they would be using the
Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners on the day of the
Bangkok launch, 22nd January 2002. All first year students
will be using the MED at the beginning of the new academic year in June.

The
MED
launches in Thailand
Tuesday
January 22nd saw the first official launch of the Macmillan
English Dictionary take place in Bangkok. To mark the launch of the
new English dictionary, teachers and booksellers were invited to enjoy
High Tea at the Siam City Hotel. Sixty teachers and university lectures,
including members of the Thailand TESOL executive committee, came to the
launch as well as over twenty booksellers.
