She is used as the subject of a verb. Some people prefer to use she after the verb “to be” but this sounds very formal and old-fashioned: Was it she who spoke to the press? In American English, however, “This is she” is the usual way that a woman replies on the telephone when someone asks to speak to her: ♦ “May I speak with Mrs. Elpin?” “This is she.”
